PANORAMA – Nu Europa Phusion
I still have vivid memories of my first visit beyond the Iron Curtain: East Berlin, late autumn 1985. The smell of brown coal is in the air, pale frontier protection policemen with weird non-trendy hairdos scrutinise you critically, and for a compulsory exchange of 25 Ostmark (the East German currency then) the gate to another world opens. A world where funny plastic-looking cars with two-stroke engines rattle along the Allee der Kosmonauten (the famous long and wide boulevard) within a grey socialist sea of prefabricated lab-construction buildings, the Plattenbauten, and where the quirkine
ss of people in oldfashioned outfits somehow reminds me of the endearing fu ture aesthetic of 1960ies Jacques Tati films. Welcome to the German Democratic Republic. So this is how Communists
dance.
Change of scene, 15 years on in the great book of world history, and some 1400 km further South East: Zagreb, Club Aquarius, late autumn 2000. A certain DJ Eddy invites me to spin some records at a
Sunday club night called Kontrapunkt – Hungarian friends of his had given him my number... Hadn’t the war just finished there? Up to this point my associations with Yugoslavia, sorry, Croatia, were sun, beach, Mali Losinji and hammond easy listening bands in the lobbies of hotel resorts by the Mediterranean, run with post-socialist casualness. My gig – totally unexpected: the first mix, and all the Aquarius punters are cheering loudly. Because of me? How did I end up here? Clichés of the East? Forget that! I finish my set 4 hours later, happy, and am handed a CDR with the most recent tunes by Eddy and his partner Dus, and my musical liaison with the New Europe
begins. Moscow, Warsaw, Belgrade, Budapest, St Petersburg, Bratislava, Vilnius, Katowice... club culture in the Wild East is booming, and I’m right in the middle, luckily. There is a definite sense of the desire for change. Curiosity, improvisational talent, a taste for
adventure, euphoria and, not least, he artfelt hospitality is what you find.
PANORAMA – Nu Europa Phusion includes some of my aural souvenirs from the journeys to our neighbours. Exclusive rare
productions from the Eastern electronic cosmos of urban underground, and mostly diffi cult to get your hands on in the West.
